Nails and their care (http://www.podium.es)
The right acre of nails doe not only have beauty benefits on hand and legs but also helps decreasing illnesses provoked by bacteria or fungus that spreads on the texture around it.

The nails, laminates that protect the last phalanx of the fingers of hand and feet, require an adequate nutrition, frequent hygiene and careful weekly attention to keep them strong and free of infections.

Smooth creams also help the nails stay strong and healthy, using non metallic nail files and plastic gloves when you work with liquids that could dye the nails, so that they will keep their natural color up, or or with chemical products and detergents that can dry the nails out and provoke scaling.

The most appropriate aliments to keep the nails strong are the same that keep your hair strong and beautiful, those products which have a high content of protein, salt, minerals and vitamins. Mineral salts that are most effective are calcium, iodine, zinc, and iron. To get those aliments we recommend consummation of milk, yogurts, fresh cheeses, as well as sesame and sea weed, since they are rich in zinc and iodine. Calf liver and spinach contain a lot of iron. Vitamins that are most beneficial are:  vitamin A, which you can find plenty of in tomatoes, red pepper and carrots, and those of the vitamin B group, which you can find in beer germ.

MORPHOLOGY OF THE NAILS: The nail, is a plain lamina and convex that covers and gives protection to the fingers´ pulp. This by several layers of keratin formed lamina, lies over the epidemic bed and has 4 boarders: 2 lateral boarders that insert themselves in the lateral furrow where you can find the epidemic retracts. -The distal boarder that ends over the free boarder of the nail and the yellow line formed by cornea substance that marks the beginning of the nail. In the proximal boarder, under the epidermis retract we find a proliferate matrix which is the zone of origin and production of the nail. This zone is easy to differentiate because of its rose color due to its thickness and is called lunula. The cutaneous retract has two faces a dorsal and a ventral. The cornea layer of both faces form an expansion called cuticle and are there to protect the nail. Nails are a  sub specialization of the skin, to be exact of the epidermis, mainly made by its main component: keratin, the main difference between epidermis and nails is the percentage of water, the first contains 85% the other one only 12%

NAILS: the care before the make up

Objective: perfect nails
The care of the nails is more than just an esthetic process, and its principal objective is to avoid its deterioration and better  its strengths

Even if it does not seem like it, nails are a type of modified skin and do not just fulfill a decorative purpose. They protect the last phalanxes of the fingers, support the finger tips in legs and hands and help us carry out actions such as scratching a surface or untying a knot. Their state can indicate how good our health is and they require special care to maintain their strength and avoid their deterioration. Alimentation, hygiene and manicure can improve their state and decrease the risk of infections.
  • Nails are formed by three layers of keratin. The first one is the shining part, the second one is called mediate keratin, and the third is the sensitive keratin.
  • Those three layers are running the risk of getting separated or doubled by the intensive use of nail scissor and files.
  • A healthy nail is oval shaped, is smooth and partly of rose color. This color is due to the great vacuolization that exists in the epidemic bed and to the transparent characteristics of the nail.
  • During infancy the nails are flexible, transparent, with a smooth surface and convex. With adults, the nails are much harder and resistant through the presence of the lunula (whitish space surrounding the rot of the nail). In high age, the nails lose their shine, they turn opaque, grayish, fragile and the lunula tends to disappear.

  • The nails of the finger on the hand of an adult grow approximately 0,1 mm a day. During infancy the growth is about 0,15 milímetros a day, while with age it slows down, to about 0,06 mm a day.
  • Las uñas tienen entre un 7 y un 16% de agua, que es conveniente mantener para que su flexibilidad y dureza sean las adecuadas.
  • The big enemies of nails are water, aggressive manicures, detergents, bad cosmetic, bad formulated nail polishes, allergic substances, hits...
  • White spots on the nails are caused by micro traumatism, little hits directly over the nail that separate the interior layers, while the exterior does not suffer any deterioration

Más Tips

It is better to prevent

Do not use aggressive nail polishes or hardeners that are too full of formol, this dries the nails and is usually the main cause for damage on the keratin layers, natural protector of the nails, leaving them defenseless in front of alteration and external aggressions.
The nail polish should be rich on oily substances and not contain acetone, since this the protecting layers attacks , the cuticle dries and the fingers yellow leaves.
Limit the use of nail polishes.
Applying hydrating creams. Let them penetrate in the skin though little massages.
If your nails show any pathology, do not apply any beauty product. This would worsen the picture.
Protect your nails against bleach and detergents using plastic gloves with woolen lining inside. Domestic chores can attack the nails especially.
Eliminate dirt daily that accumulates itself under the nails.
Dry your hands and nails perfectly after you wash them. Water deteriorates the lamina and cuticle, drying them out. In addition, humidity can foster infections.
Protect your nails from sun and external aggressions such as extreme cold, rain and heat.
If a nail has one infection or a fungus never apply the same file that you used on your healthy hand avoiding a transmission of the infection.
Attention smokers. Tobacco is pernicious for the health of your nails. In addition to hampering the growth, due to a deficit in nutrition through shortening of blood vases, it is also very anti esthetic, as they for example become yellows.
The perfect manicure
Do not manicure more than once a week.
The length of the nails should not exceed the fleshy part, since the bigger the surface is the bigger is the water loss
Do not pull out bothering hang nails.
Do not eliminate cuticles. They are the natural protection from damaging the ‘fabric’ of the nail. Exaggerated cutting of the cuticle increases the possibility to get an infection.
To get nail polish off, squeeze the nail first for a few seconds with a piece of cotton drenched with nail polish remover that does not contain acetone.
To get the nails in shape use a carton file -metallic ones can splinter- using them from the side to the center, with smooth and continuous movements. Avoid using scissors.
Do not use any aggressive methods. Give your nails shine with upholstered chamois or similar stuff.
If you get used to applying nail polish, do not forget to use a protecting base before. Spread the nail polish with fine layers and wait a few moments before you apply another cap.

Toe nails the big forgotten ones
You should give your toe nails special attention. Toe nails that are too long too short or badly cut can get you problems or cause infections.
Cut your nails after washing your feet, they will be softer and easier to cut.
Use non sharp scissors. Do not use pointy scissors, nail clippers, razor blades, metallic files, etc.
Cut them horizontally, leaving the ends straight.
Do not cut them too much. Let the lamina (the visible part of the nail) at least go  1 mm over the fleshy part of the toe nail.

Nourish them from within
The essential components of the nails are keratin, water and lipid, calcium and iron.
The best aliments to maintain strong nails are the same that give strength and beauty to your hair, they are those who are rich in proteins, mineral salts and vitamins.
The most effective mineral salts are calcium, iodine, zinc, and iron. Therefore we recommend to consummate milk, yogurts, fresh cheeses, calf liver, spinaches, lentils, sesame and sea weed.
The most beneficent vitamins for the nails are vitamin A, which you can find plenty of in tomatoes red peppers and carrots, and the vitamins of the B group, that you can find for example in beer germs.
